STEMport: Summer of STEM

This course will focus on teaching parents strategies for engaging their children in STEM Educational activities during the summer months. Just because school is out, doesn't mean the learning has to stop. Actually, it is important that learning doesn't stop in order for children to avoid summer learning loss. In this course, you will learn about various reasons about why engaging your children in summer learning is important, the various types of summer learning activities and making a summer learning plan for your children.

A native of Miami, Florida and an alumnus of Florida A & M University, Ms. Tokiwa T. Smith is a Chemical Engineer, Social Entrepreneur and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Educator. She has over 15 years’ experience in education, government and philanthropy having worked for organizations such as Atlanta Public Schools, California State University East Bay, Georgia State University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Spelman College. Ms. Smith is the CEO and Principal Consultant of Kemet Educational Services, a STEM educational consulting firm that focuses on ensuring that pre-college, community college and undergraduate students are prepared to pursue STEM careers. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. , a nonprofit organization that exposes urban youth to STEMand STEM Careers by connecting them with members of the STEM community.

Ms. Smith is an author, writer and workshop speaker on topics in STEM education and professional development for educators, parents and pre-college and undergraduate students. Ms. Smith serves on the advisory boards and committee of several STEM Education organizations. Ms. Smith’s work has been featured in several media outlets. In 2013 she was named as one Ebony Magazine’s 10 Black Twitter Tweeps to Watch! and in 2014, she was featured on NPR’s Tell Me More Women Digital Thinkers Tweet for A Day .In 2014, she wrote her first book A Guide to Hosting STEM Events.In 2018, she was awarded the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Educational Leadership Award for K-12 Promotion of Education. In 2018, she was also selected as one of the nonprofit leaders chosen for the Foundation Center South Boys and Men of Color Executive Director Collaboration Circle. She is also 4.0 Schools Fall 2018 Essential Fellow for her work with her consulting firm Kemet Educational Services. She currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
